Music

In kindergarten and grades 1-2, students learn about vocal technique along with the ability to follow choral conducting. They also learn about acoustics, both frequency and sound waves. Students have the opportunity to explore instruments of the Orchestra and their division into the four families: String, Woodwind, Brass and Percussion. Students have fun preparing for both the Holiday Sing Along and Spring Concerts and delight in performing at both.

In grades 3-4, students continue to build upon their knowledge of vocal technique and the ability to follow choral conducting. Students in grades 3-4 have the opportunity to learn to play the recorder. There is a high focus on breath control, finger positioning, and performing together as a recorder ensemble. They also begin to learn to read musical notation. Students enjoy preparing and performing at both the Holiday Sing Along and Spring concerts.

In Middle School, students learn about historical periods of music from Baroque to Romantic. Students add to their knowledge of vocal technique with learning the correct technique for stick and mallet percussion, including basic rudiments. They recognize the importance of and work on practicing to keep tempos steady when playing in ensembles. They enjoy perfecting and demonstrating this learning at the Holiday Sing Along and Spring Concerts.
