Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging (DEIB)
“When we're talking about diversity, it's not a box to check. It is a reality that should be deeply felt and held and valued by all of us.”
- Ava DuVernay
The Walden School believes that acknowledging diversity is essential to learning. We embrace diversity as a core value, ensuring every student feels valued, respected, accepted, and empowered to succeed. Our goal is to nurture the authentic expression of our students and enable each child to understand, explore, and be proud of their own identity and respect the uniqueness of others.
In order to do this, The Walden School actively and intentionally integrates diversity issues and themes throughout our curriculum on a daily basis. Our approach begins in the classroom, where we celebrate the cultural, ethnic, gender, and religious diversity as well as socioeconomic and family structure differences among our students and families. As a Preschool - 5th grade school, we value our opportunities to foster awareness of differences by providing our students with “mirrors, windows, and sliding glass doors” and making the most of teachable moments. We recognize that understanding bias and nurturing a diverse community are ongoing challenges that require determination and empathy, which we aim to model ourselves and inspire in our students.
How Walden Defines Diversity
Diversity encompasses the rich tapestry of human experiences, embracing various characteristics, backgrounds, and perspectives. These encompass variances in race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, socioeconomic status, age, ability, religion, cultural heritage, language, geographic origin, and beyond. It represents recognizing and celebrating individuals' unique attributes and identities, fostering inclusivity, equity, and mutual respect.
How Walden Defines Equity
Equity refers to the fair treatment, access, and opportunity for all individuals, regardless of their background, identity, or circumstances. It involves identifying and addressing systemic barriers and biases to ensure everyone has what they need to thrive. Equity recognizes that individuals may require different support or resources to achieve equitable outcomes, aiming to level the playing field and promote justice and fairness.
How Walden Defines Inclusion
Inclusions refers to ensuring all individuals feel valued, respected, and included in all aspects of society regardless of their background, identity, or circumstances. It involves creating environments where diversity is embraced and individuals are empowered to participate fully and contribute their unique perspectives. Inclusion recognizes and celebrates differences, removing barriers to participation and promoting equal access to opportunities for everyone.
How Walden Defines Belonging
Belonging refers to acceptance, connection, and inclusion. It encompasses the sense of being valued, respected, and understood by others and feeling like an integral part of the collective identity. Belonging involves shared experiences, values, mutual support, and camaraderie. It is a fundamental human need that contributes to the overall well-being and fulfillment, fostering a sense of security and confidence in one's place in the world.
