Art

Art at The Walden School is a space to explore, empower, and imagine. While discovering new methods and materials in art, students practice building confidence, empathy, and resiliency. Art helps students learn how to see the world differently and communicate with unique artistic styles and voices. Projects offer windows to contemporary or historical art movements and mirrors reflecting the student's creative self. Art teacher, Ms. Quincy, teaches students how to respect the resources used while caring for the environment and each other.

Music

The Music program at The Walden School is optimized to fit the needs and range of its students. Along with the vocal program, various instrumental ensembles have evolved and continued to expand. Students are also taught music theory and history with a unique perspective from someone by Mr. Wert, who has performed in every primary genre of music over the past thirty years. Two concerts are performed during the school year, at the Media Theater where students perform a diverse repertoire. This curriculum is unique and engaging as it prepares learners for further musical endeavors in their educational journey along with a lifelong appreciation and understanding.

LifeSkills

LifeSkills is part of our school counseling program led by Mrs. Kerby, which provides opportunities for students to engage in character-building activities throughout the year. LifeSkills is a Social Emotional Learning (SEL) class that teaches attitudes, beliefs, and behaviors that help people be responsible citizens. LifeSkills highlights a character trait each month, such as respect, kindness, or self-control, to create a respectful school climate and promote healthy student development and academic achievement, which our students need to be successful now and later in life.

Spanish

Learning a second language in early education has several benefits, including improved memory skills, confidence building, and cultural awareness. The Spanish curriculum at Walden
provides a solid foundation of fundamental vocabulary and correct pronunciation while instilling a sense of curiosity toward customs and traditions. While incorporating visual and auditory
learning, students will also enjoy various games, music, and cultural immersion.

Theatre

The theatre program at Walden teaches acting to Upper Elementary children as it nurtures creativity, boosts confidence, promotes teamwork, and helps students learn to express their feelings and ideas.  Students are guided through fundamental acting techniques that encourages imaginative play, enables them to express themselves, and explore various perspectives. We keep the approach enjoyable and engaging, focusing on creativity and self-expression rather than a flawless performance. Activities like games, improvisation, and simple scenes enhance students' acting abilities while developing essential life skills like communication and empathy.

Physical Education

The physical education program at The Walden School is dedicated to nurturing the overall well-being and physical fitness of students. The comprehensive program offers a wide range of activities, including team sports, individual fitness training, and outdoor recreational pursuits. Through an engaging and supportive approach, students not only develop their physical abilities but also cultivate essential values such as teamwork and sportsmanship. Walden places a strong emphasis on promoting healthy habits, including nutrition and overall wellness, to ensure that students are well-equipped for a lifetime of health and fitness.

Library

Primary students have a half hour of library time each week to foster a love of literacy. These story hours include various seasonal/holiday themes and classic stories supplemented by engaging art activities and puppet shows. A treasured part of the library time is when the children select a book to take home for a week. The Walden School library is a valuable resource center used by students and teachers alike!
