  • Our son started The Walden School this year at three years old for the Pre-K program and we absolutely love it. I was impressed not only with the program, but the amazing staff even before he began the school year. A couple of months before starting, we visited the school for a tour. It was not a planned visit as we had found an opening in our work schedules that morning. We were told it was not a problem and that we could come in within a couple of hours. Other schools we had visited had rushed us through a tour, even when we had scheduled in advance. However, the director of admissions at Walden, Kathy took over two hours to let us tour and had made accommodations for a teacher to engage with our son upon his visit. She provided us with a very warm welcome and answered every question we had. During this short tour we came to understand that Walden is so much more than a wonderful environment for our son to learn, but that he would be cared for, loved, and in a safe and comfortable environment. We also learned that character development was a huge part of Walden's philosophy all the way up through 8th grade. This is something very seldom seen in education, but is very important to child development. After watching him grow this year, we are so pleased with our experience. For his young mind, there is constant engagement and learning through every part of his day. The teachers and staff treat the students as their own children. His classroom teachers, Barbara and Liz are wonderful and proactive. They have always been there to answer any questions or concerns we have had and have made us feel comfortable when we were unsure about stages of development we were unfamiliar with. The biggest part of what our son has taken away thus far, is empathy and awareness of others. He is being guided everyday to be a more empathetic and thoughtful person. The Montessori approach is an impressive educational model, in that it allows for guided exploration, opening up so may doors for learning in a very individualized way. It makes us very happy to hear that out son "love(s) big boy school" and is excited about everyday at Walden. We are thrilled and cannot wait to see what is in store for our son's future.
  • The Walden School is wonderful! My daughter started at Walden in the pre-school program and is currently in their middle school. She loves it! She looks forward to attending school each day. The teachers routinely go above and beyond and they have helped my daughter develop a true love of learning.
  • Like many reviewers have already noted, The Walden School does a superior job of focusing on the whole child. Learning is personalized and the students are actively engaged in meaningful work. The emphasis on peace education and life skills allow children and teachers to co-create an environment that is socially and emotionally safe. The school is led and staffed by qualified and caring administrators and teachers. And their joy and love of teaching and learning resonates within the children and the school community. Our first grader has attended The Walden School since he was 3-years-old. A few months into his first year at Walden, he said to me, “Mom…when my teacher looks at me, I think she might love me!!” At that moment, I knew we had chosen the right school for our son. It’s a place where HE KNOWS he is loved!
  • Our experience at Walden has been a true blessing to our family. Our son started preschool at Walden and is now a flourishing fourth grader! Our daughter started as a preschooler and is now an excited Kindergartener. Our intentions initially were to have our children attend Walden for preschool and Kindergarten to learn the Montessori philosophy and then transfer. After all, we moved to Wallingford because of the great school district. However, our experience with the teachers, classroom community and fellow parents have given us a new perspective. Our children are happy and learning in a safe and fun environment. The Walden community is committed to each individual child out of respect and genuine concern for their best interest
  • My three children are well into their second year at Walden, ranging from pre-K to 5th grade. We were new to the area when they started at Walden and Walden has become one of the main pillars of our life here. We are a part of a warm, vibrant, caring community ranging from the teachers, to the administrators of the school, to the parents and children. I find the school to be truly focused on the needs of the individual child and going out of their way to understand and accommodate them. We had some difficult times with two of our children, and the school gave them maximum support and showed me they truly cared about their well-being and happiness above all else. They also were flexible and resourceful to allow their individual needs to be met, while reaching a nice balance with the rest of the classroom.
  • You have created such a special place for children to come together to grow and learn.  From the first moment I entered the school, I knew it was a magical place.  Now that our first year at Walden is coming to an end, I can say that my high expectations have been far surpassed!  I am so thrilled that our family has become a part of your exceptional community.  I am already looking forward to next year.  -- Submitted by a parent
  • For my family The Walden School has been life changing. The phrase the sight of school should make a child smile posted on the sign outside the school was what led me to investigate further. After a lot of research, and experience at a prior school, we decided to enroll both of our children in this wonderful school. The extraordinary care and support that my kids have received from every staff member has made a great difference in our lives. My kids tell me about their day and thrive on the approach used by The Walden School that motivates children to learn. The Walden School has made a world of difference and my kids now have fun learning at school. Isn't that what school should be about. —Submitted by a parent
  • Our daughter started preschool at The Walden School this year, and we could not be more thrilled with her experience there so far. Walden's thoughtful, focused approach to nurturing each child s individual interests and strengths is extremely appealing to us. The children are engaged, focused, and calm in their activities. It seems to us the best possible environment for learning one in which the students enjoy what they are doing but are also doing those things in a way that is purposeful and meaningful to them. Our daughter walks in every morning with such confidence and happy anticipation - it is a real thrill for us knowing that she genuinely wants to be there every day and is already associating learning with joy and positive self-esteem. —Submitted by a parent
  • There is nothing better than sitting with my son, who just read every page of his journal and comprehension book to me. He is so proud of himself. I just can't stop smiling at him. Now he's grabbing a  snack so he can read to me. This is amazing. I know the happiness of who he is and what he is doing would not be evident in his every move at home if he attended any other school, and he feels it! It's contagious! - Submitted by a parent
  • I believe the skills that our sons learned at Walden provided them with tool to maximize their potential. One of our sons is currently thriving in high school largely because he has fabulous study and organizational skills. I know that these skills and study discipline were developed in their early schooling years, while at Walden. How many times have you heard about kids who 'don't live up to their potential'? My kids learned at Walden to unlock their potential and strive towards excellence. My husband and I are forever thankful that we made the decision to send our children to Walden.

  • My son started 18 months ago at Walden in 5th grade. A child that 'hated' school, was sent to the office periodically and would come home crying (25 kids in his class and strong focus on standard testing). I had to do something different for him and after much research, decided on Walden. He was very nervous and scared at first, but the Walden staff and teachers advised to let him be himself as children operate at their own pace. So they watched and guided him in this new school ... now he is a great student, loves school and is developing deep relationships with his peers. I could not be more pleased at the approach they have taken with him. He is cared for and respected at Walden and is thriving. He actually told me he loves school and can be himself! I love the communication and thought that goes into the academic program and just as importantly, the leadership and social skills required to have success and happiness in life. Well done! —Submitted by a parent

  • As someone who has been affiliated with The Walden School for more than 25 years, I couldn't be more proud of the work that happens here every day. Teachers work tirelessly to provide a peaceful, caring, nurturing and challenging environment for all Walden students. It's a lovely place for children to spend most of their waking hours! —Submitted by a teacher
  • Our son is in his second year of preschool at The Walden School. In this time we have grown to know a strong and committed faculty in an environment that encourages and fosters collaboration and nurtures individuals learning strengths and styles. There is gentle guidance and instruction in how to be a good person, how to care for yourself, your friends, your community, and the world. From our son's first day at TWS he has excelled. He is learning concepts that involve a higher level of thinking. His eagerness for learning does not stop when he comes home, the schools' philosophy encourages a life long love for learning and it is evident in our son. His only wish is to attend TWS full day program. —Submitted by a parent
  • My son is in his first year in the preschool program and he truly loves attending The Walden School. He is enrolled half days, three days a week to give him some schooling and social interaction, and allow his sister some important on-on-one time. He wishes he was there more, and will be next year for lunch/recess etc either 3 full days or 5 half days. We really appreciate the mixed age classrooms and he even has buddies in the upper grades. The Montessori materials are beautiful, and in addition to his take-home backpack work I get peeks at his classroom activities in monthly newsletters and online photo albums. Excellent, quality teaching that is challenging him in math, letters, and even "lifeskills" like caring and courage. Add in music, art, library, and Spanish and we couldn't be happier! Tuition assistance is available. —Submitted by a parent
